Etymology
The word kilobit comes from the prefix kilo-, meaning 'thousand', as in kilogram or kilometre, and bit, short for 'binary digit', a tiny piece of computer data that is either a '1' or a '0'. So a kilobit is simply 'a thousand bits', which is why we use it to measure small amounts of data and internet speed.
