isoflurane = iso + flurane
The segments are specialized chemical combining forms; knowing 'iso' and 'fluor'/'flurane' does not let a B1 learner infer 'inhalation anesthetic'.
Etymology
Isoflurane is made of parts: iso- meaning 'same', fluor- from the element you also see in fluoride (toothpaste), and -ane which marks a simple chemical. So isoflurane is a fluorine-containing chemical used as a gas or liquid to make patients sleep during surgery.
