Morphology
The adjective 'interphalangeal' literally means 'between phalanges' and when combined with 'joint' yields 'a joint between the phalanges.' Although this is technical medical vocabulary, its meaning is transparently compositional from its parts, so a learner who knows the constituents can derive the overall sense.
Etymology
Interphalangeal joint is built from parts that tell its meaning: inter means 'between' and phalangeal refers to the small finger or toe bones called 'phalanges'. So it literally names the joint that sits between those bones, which is why it means 'any joint between the bones of a finger or toe'.
