Etymology

Imbecile comes from the Latin imbecillus, where in- means 'not' and the rest comes from a word for 'staff' or 'stick', so it originally meant 'without a staff' or 'weak'. It later described mental weakness in medicine and today it is an offensive word for someone seen as very foolish.
