Etymology
Hydroxyl comes from hydro- ('water') and -oxyl (related to oxygen), so the name points to the two atoms it has: one hydrogen and one oxygen together as the 'OH' group. That's why hydroxyl is the name for the 'OH' part you find in alcohols and many other molecules.
