Etymology
Howdah comes from the Hindi/Urdu word hauda, which means 'seat' or 'bench'. It was the raised, often covered seat put on an elephant or camel in South Asia, so a howdah today is the special seat or platform used for riding those animals, like a 'saddle' or small carriage.
