Morphology

hindcast = cast (semi-transparent) = hind + cast

Formed by prefixation of 'hind-' to the verb 'cast'; the meaning 'cast into the past' is transparent by analogy with 'forecast' but the prefix 'hind-' is less productive and the usage is specialized.

Etymology

Hindcast comes from hind 'back' and cast as in forecast. To hindcast is to run a model back over past events to recreate them and to check that the model works.
