Etymology
The word gouty comes from gout, which comes from the Latin word gutta, meaning 'a drop'. People long ago thought a tiny 'drop' of bad fluid fell into a joint and caused sharp pain, so gouty describes someone 'suffering from gout' with swollen, painful joints.
