The phrase is transparently compositional: 'gender' names the social/sex category and 'role' denotes the expected duties or behaviors, so 'gender role' naturally means the behaviors associated with a particular gender. This is a common, cross-linguistically paralleled construction and therefore a B1 learner who knows the two constituents would readily infer the meaning.
Etymology
Gender role comes from the idea of a 'role' in a play: gender names being 'male' or 'female' and role is the 'part' someone plays. So gender role means the public part or behavior people 'expect' from a man or a woman.
