Morphology

freehold = free + hold (semi-transparent) = free + hold

The components 'free' + 'hold' are recognisable, but the sense is a technical legal term for a form of ownership, which is not obvious to all learners.

Etymology

Freehold is made of two simple parts, free and hold, where free means 'not controlled' and hold means 'to keep or own'. So a freehold is ownership of land or a building that you keep for as long as you want, not something you rent.
