Etymology
The word fluorocarbon comes from fluoro-, from the element fluorine, as in 'fluoride' in toothpaste, and carbon, the common element in many molecules. So a fluorocarbon is a carbon-based molecule where some hydrogen atoms are replaced by fluorine, which is why these chemicals are strong and used in coolants and aerosol products.
