Morphology

ferrite = ferr + ite

Although built from the combining form 'ferr-' (iron) + the mineral-forming suffix '-ite', the root 'ferr-' is not a standalone English word and the term is a technical mineral/metallurgical name, so an average B1 learner would not be able to derive its meaning from familiar English bases.

Etymology

The word ferrite comes from the Latin ferrum, meaning 'iron', and the ending -ite used for 'minerals'. So, ferrite means an 'iron' form, which is why it names the soft, magnetic form of iron found in steel.
