The meaning 'a special or prominent article covering a subject in depth' is directly and compositionally derived from 'feature' (a highlighted or focused item) modifying 'article' (a newspaper/magazine piece). This modifier–head pattern is common and transparent across languages, so a B1 learner who knows both words would readily infer the MWE's meaning.
Etymology
Feature article comes from the old idea of a feature as the main show or special item in a program, and article meaning a written piece. So newspapers and magazines used feature + article to name a long, important story that 'stands out' and looks at a topic 'in depth'.
