Etymology
The word extremism comes from extreme, from the Latin extremus meaning 'outermost' or 'farthest', plus the ending -ism meaning 'a belief or practice'. So extremism is literally a belief at the 'far edge', which is why it means very strong, uncompromising political or religious views.
