Etymology
Estradiol comes from the hormone family estrogen, plus di- meaning 'two' and -ol meaning 'alcohol' (as in ethanol). So estradiol is named for being an estrogen with two 'alcohol' parts, which helps explain why it is a main, powerful natural female hormone.
