Surface Forms
Morphology
endocarditis = endocardium (opaque) = endo + cardi + itis
The formation from 'endocardium' + '-itis' is a regular medical suffixation indicating inflammation of the named tissue.
Etymology
Endocarditis comes from three parts: endo- meaning 'inside', cardia meaning 'heart', and -itis meaning 'inflammation', the same ending you see in tonsillitis. So endocarditis literally means 'inflammation inside the heart', which explains the medical meaning of the word.
