Etymology
Electromagnet is made of electro- and magnet, where electro- appears in electric and comes from a Greek word for 'amber', and magnet comes from stones that 'attract' iron. So an electromagnet is a magnet made by electricity, which is why a coil of wire becomes magnetic when current flows.
