Morphology
drop-down + menu
The term is compositionally transparent: 'drop-down' literally describes something that 'drops down' and 'menu' is a list of options, so a learner who knows 'drop', 'down', and 'menu' can infer a list that appears below a selection. The motion-based modifier and its use in interfaces are common and cross-linguistically transparent, making the overall meaning directly derivable.
Etymology
Drop-down menu gets its name from the picture of a list that drops down from a menu on the screen. When you click, the 'options' appear below so you can 'choose' one.
