Although formed by adding the prefix 'dia-' to 'magnetic', the prefix meaning is specialized and not obvious to average learners, so the resulting meaning 'repelled by a magnetic field' is not predictable from 'magnetic' alone.

Etymology

Diamagnetic joins dia-, used here like 'opposite' or 'against', and magnetic, from magnet meaning 'relating to magnets'. So a diamagnetic material acts 'against' a magnetic field and is slightly 'pushed away' by a magnet.
