Morphology

dialog + box

The meaning is directly and transparently derived from 'dialog' (a spoken/exchange-like prompt or interaction) combined with 'box' (a container or rectangular area): a box that contains a dialog or prompt on the screen. This noun–noun composition is common and cross-linguistically mirrored (e.g. Spanish 'ventana de diálogo', French 'fenêtre de dialogue'), so a B1 learner who knows the constituents can readily infer the computing sense.

Etymology

The term dialog box comes from the idea of a dialog, a short conversation inside a small box on the screen. It 'talks' to the user and asks for a response like 'OK' or 'Cancel', which is why it means a small window that needs your answer.
