Etymology
Deprecative comes from the Latin parts de- and prec-, where prec- is related to the English word pray and meant 'to ask' or 'to pray' and de- can mean 'away'. Long ago people would 'pray away' or ask that something be removed when they did not like it, so a deprecative comment is one that shows disapproval or makes something seem unimportant.
