Morphology

depict = de + pict

Although the form looks like de- + pict, 'pict' is a Latin combining form rather than a standalone English base, so learners cannot reliably derive the meaning from the parts.

Etymology

Depict comes from Latin parts de- and pict meaning 'paint' and is the same root as picture. So, to depict something is to 'paint' it with words or images, which is why we use it for showing or describing people and scenes.
