The prefix 'de-' (remove) plus the root 'hydrogen' are clear, but '-ase' is a specialized enzyme suffix that many learners may not recognise, so understanding the precise enzyme function is only partly transparent.

Etymology

Dehydrogenase is made of three parts: de- meaning 'remove', hydrogen meaning 'the hydrogen atom', and -ase meaning 'an enzyme', as in lactase. So, a dehydrogenase is an 'enzyme' that 'removes' hydrogen from other molecules.
