Etymology
The word dB is short for decibel. It comes from deci- meaning 'one tenth', as in decimal, and the unit Bel, named after Alexander Graham Bell, the telephone inventor. So a dB is one tenth of a Bel, which is why we use dB to measure changes in sound or signal strength.
