Surface Forms

Morphology

chondrosarcoma = sarcoma (semi-transparent) = chondro + sarcoma

Formed by the medical combining form 'chondro-' (cartilage) + 'sarcoma' (malignant tumor); the formation is regular in medical terminology but both elements are technical and unlikely to be known to an average B1 learner.

Etymology

Chondrosarcoma comes from the parts chondro- ('cartilage') and -sarcoma ('a tumor of flesh'), so it literally means a tumor made of cartilage. That's why a chondrosarcoma is a type of cancer that develops from cartilage cells, often in bone.
