Morphology

centroid = center (semi-transparent) = center + oid

The relation to 'center' is clear, but the suffix '-oid' is a less familiar combining form and the technical geometric sense 'center of mass' is specialized.

Etymology

Centroid starts with centro- meaning 'center' and ends with -oid meaning 'like', the same ending in asteroid and humanoid. So a centroid is the 'center-like' point of a shape, the point where it would balance.
