The word cartoonist comes from cartoon, which comes from the Italian cartone meaning 'large sheet of paper' and from carta 'paper'. Artists once used these big paper sheets for full-size drawings, and later magazines used the word cartoon for short, funny or political pictures, so a cartoonist is someone who makes those drawings.
