Etymology

Carabiner comes from the German Karabiner, which came from the French carabinier, a name for a soldier who carried a 'carbine' or 'short rifle'. Soldiers used a strong metal hook to hold their gun, and that hooked clip gave the name to the small metal clip climbers use today to connect gear quickly and safely.
