Bobsledding comes from bobsled, which is made of bob (meaning 'to move up and down') and sled ('a small vehicle on runners'). A helpful way to remember it is to picture a small sled 'bobbing' down the ice at high speed, so bobsledding is the sport of riding a fast sled down an ice track.
