Morphology

board + member

Both constituents are semantically clear: 'board' (a committee overseeing an institution) and 'member' (a person in a group). The compound simply denotes a person who is a member of that committee, a compositional and cross-linguistically common pattern that a B1 learner who knows the parts can readily infer.

Etymology

Board member comes from older times when people met around a wooden board, meaning a table, to make decisions. A member was someone who sat at that table, so board member now means 'a person who helps run a company or organization'.
