Morphology

bill + of + lading

The compound follows a straightforward noun + of + noun composition: 'bill' (a document) + 'of' (relating to) + 'lading' (goods loaded for transport) yields a document relating to loaded goods. Although 'lading' is a less common word, if a B1 learner knows the constituent meanings the overall sense 'document acknowledging cargo/transport terms' is directly derivable and therefore transparent.

Etymology

Bill of lading comes from two older words: bill meaning a paper note and lading meaning the act of loading goods onto a ship. Traders used that paper bill to prove the cargo was 'loaded' and to show who owned the goods, so today a bill of lading is the official document that says goods were 'received' for shipment.
