If a learner knows 'theist', the opposite meaning is fairly clear, but the learned negative prefix 'a-' is less familiar and less productive than common English negators such as 'un-'.
Etymology
Atheist comes from Greek parts a- meaning 'not' and theos meaning 'god', the same root you see in theology. So an atheist is a person who 'does not' believe in a god.
