Etymology
The word aqueduct comes from Latin parts aqua 'water' and duct 'to lead', the same aqua you see in aquarium and the duct like an 'air duct'. So an aqueduct literally 'leads water' across a valley, which is why it is a bridge-like structure that carries water.
