Etymology
The word antimacassar comes from the parts anti- meaning 'against' and Macassar, a 'hair oil' named after the city 'Makassar' in Indonesia. People put a small cloth on the back or arms of chairs to stop that oil from staining the chair fabric, which is why an antimacassar protects the chair.
