Morphology

alphabetic + writing

The meaning is directly and transparently derived from combining 'alphabetic' (using letters) with 'writing' (a system or practice of producing text), so a B1 learner who knows both constituents can infer it refers to a writing system that uses an alphabet. This is a compositional, cross-linguistically common term (e.g., French 'écriture alphabétique', Spanish 'escritura alfabética'), so despite being somewhat technical it remains transparent to learners.

Etymology

Alphabetic writing comes from the idea of using a small set of letters where each sign stands for one sound. So, instead of drawing whole pictures, alphabetic writing uses letter signs to 'represent sounds', and that is why it means 'a system of writing where symbols represent individual sounds or letters'.
