Morphology

acetylsalicylic + acid

The term is a technical chemical name: while it is morphologically compositional (acetyl + salicylic + acid), the element 'acetylsalicylic' is specialist vocabulary that a B1 learner would not understand, and knowing only 'acid' does not yield the specific meaning 'aspirin' or its medical uses. Even though many languages use a cognate technical term, the drug sense is not predictably derivable by an average B1 learner from the constituents.

Etymology

Acetylsalicylic acid gets its name from adding acetyl (a small chemical part) to salicylic acid, the pain-relief substance first found in willow bark. People used willow bark for aches long ago, and this change made a gentler medicine that we call 'aspirin' today.
