Morphology
The term denotes a range (band) of frequencies or wavelengths where absorption occurs, which directly follows from combining 'absorption' (the process of taking up energy) with 'band' (a range of frequencies). Though somewhat technical, the meaning is fully compositional and should be inferable to a learner who knows both constituent words.
Etymology
Absorption band comes from the picture of a rainbow where a material takes away some colours. When white light goes through a substance, the substance 'absorbs' some colours and you see a dark band in the rainbow. So an absorption band is this dark stripe that shows which colours are missing, and that helps scientists know what the substance is.
