Etymology

Vibrio comes from the Latin root vibr-, meaning 'to shake' or 'vibrate', and it is the same root as the English word vibrate. Scientists named these bacteria for their quick, wiggling movement, so Vibrio refers to bacteria that seem to 'vibrate'.
