Etymology

Valletta is the name of Malta's capital and comes from the surname of the knight Jean Parisot de Valette, who led the defence of the island and helped found the city. A helpful way to remember it is that the Italian word valletta sounds like 'little valley', so you can think of the place as 'Valette's little town', which explains why the city carries his name.
