Etymology

Tyranni comes from the bird genus Tyrannus, which itself comes from the Greek word turannos meaning 'tyrant' or 'ruler'. These birds were named for their bold, sometimes aggressive behavior, as in the kingbird, so Tyranni is now the group name for New World flycatchers and their relatives.
