Etymology
Tchad is the French name for the country Chad, and it comes from Lake Chad. The lake's name came from a local African word meaning 'lake', so the country was named after the lake. A helpful way to remember the French spelling is that Tch makes the same 'ch' sound as in English 'church', so Tchad looks different but sounds like Chad.
