Morphology
Tai + Yuan
The form 'Tai Yuan' transparently combines 'Tai' (a known language branch) with 'Yuan' as a proper name, yielding the predictable interpretation ‘the Yuan variety of Tai’ (i.e., a Tai language or subgroup). This follows a common naming pattern for language varieties (e.g., Tai Dam, Tai Lue), so a B1 learner who knows the constituents would readily infer it denotes a Tai language, even if they cannot infer the exact regional distribution.
Etymology
Tai Yuan comes from words the local people used for themselves: Tai meant 'people' and Yuan named their 'group' or 'home' in the north. So today Tai Yuan is the name of the language spoken by those people in northern Thailand.
