Saigon comes from the older local name Sài Gòn, which probably came from Vietnamese words for a 'cotton tree' or from a Khmer phrase meaning 'forest town'. So imagine a city of big trees — that picture became the place name, and people still call Ho Chi Minh City Saigon today.
