Morphology

Roman + mythology

The meaning is directly derivable from combining 'Roman' (pertaining to Rome) and 'mythology' (a body of myths): together they denote the myths/traditional stories of Rome. This noun-noun compositional pattern is common cross-linguistically and follows straightforward semantic combination, so a B1 learner who knows both constituents will readily understand it.

Etymology

Roman mythology began as the stories Romans told to explain how Rome started and who their 'gods' and 'heroes' were, like the famous tale of Romulus and Remus being raised by a wolf. The word Roman shows where the stories come from and mythology means old 'stories' about gods. Because the Romans also used many Greek tales and gave the same gods new names, Roman mythology now means the traditional 'stories' about Roman gods, heroes, and the 'origins' of Roman culture.
