Etymology

Regalecus comes from the Latin root regal- meaning 'royal', the same root as the English word regal. Because the giant oarfish in this group look long and grand, scientists gave them a 'royal' name, which is why Regalecus refers to those large, ribbon-like deep-sea fish.
