Etymology
Philippines comes from the Spanish name Las Islas Filipinas, which means 'Philip's islands' and was named to honor King Philip II of Spain. The name Philip originally means 'lover of horses' in Greek, but here it simply shows the islands were named after a person, which is why the country is called the Philippines.
