Etymology
Philippi is the name of an ancient city and comes from the Greek name Philippos, which means 'lover of horses' because philo- means 'love' and hippos means 'horse'. It was named for a ruler called Philip, so Philippi simply means 'the town of Philip' and that is why the city has that name today.
