Etymology

Orchidaceae comes from the Greek root orchis, which means 'testicle' because some early plant scientists thought the plant's root parts looked like small testicles, and the common word orchid comes from the same root. The Latin ending -aceae means 'family' in plant names, so Orchidaceae names the 'family of orchids'.
