Morphology

Nusa + Tenggara

The name is fully compositional: in Indonesian 'Nusa' means 'island' and 'Tenggara' means 'southeast', so the compound denotes the 'southeast islands/region'. Although both constituents are foreign to typical B1 English learners and therefore may be unfamiliar, if a learner knows the meanings of the parts the overall toponym is directly derivable.

Etymology

Nusa Tenggara comes from local words: Nusa means 'island' and Tenggara means 'southeast'. So the name literally means 'southeast islands', which explains why it refers to the group of islands east of Java.
