Etymology

Liquidambar comes from Latin parts liquidus ('liquid') and ambra ('amber') because the tree makes a sticky, golden sap that looks like liquid amber. That's why it is often called 'sweet gum' and the name reminds you of a tree that gives a sweet, liquid resin and bright autumn leaves.
